چکیده

This study sought to determine the efficacy of Tithonia diversifolia (African Sunflower) as pesticides against maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais and bean beetle Callosobruchus maculatus. The research was conducted ascertain toxicity potency T. on insects’ mortality, repellency, adult emergence, seed damage weight loss for treatment stored products their minimum effective dosage application. collected from premises Kwara State University, Malete were air-dried, grinded dissolved in 50 g 600 ml four different extracts (Ethanol, Methanol, n-Hexane aqueous). S. C. maculatus reared laboratory at 60-75% relative humidity 25-35 oC. After whole extraction, ten unsexed infested 10 grains replicated three times each application with levels. mortality other parameters counted post-treatment. mean results studied significantly (P< 0.05). N-hexane most toxic while Methanol extract Thus, all potent, they reduced oviposition, increased improved repellence, inhibited reproduction, grain storage compared untreated control. Subjected qualitative phytochemical screening, active compounds discovered be present include tannin, flavonoid, saponin, phenol, terpenoid, glucosides alkaloid. proffers use diversifolia, a readily available, safe ecofriendly botanical farmers short long-term products.

Resistance of maize varieties to the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

This study aimed at evaluating commonly used maize varieties, collected from Melkasa and Bako Agricultural Research Centers and Haramaya University, Ethiopia, against the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais Motsch., one of the most important cosmopolitan stored product pests in maize. A total of 13 improved maize varieties were screened for their relative susceptibility to S. zeamais. The Dobie ind...

Deterrent activity of plant lectins on cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) oviposition.

A set of 14 plant lectins was screened in a binary choice bioassay for inhibitory activity on cowpea weevil Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) oviposition. Coating of chickpea seeds (Cicer arietinum L.) with a 0.05% (w/v) solution of plant lectins caused a significant reduction in egg laying. Control experiments with heat inactivated lectin and BSA indicated that the observed deterrent effects are s...

EVALUATION OF SELECTED INSECTICIDES AS SEED PROTECTANTS AGAINST THE MAIZE WEEVIL, (Sitophilus zeamais M

An investigation was carried out to evaluate the relative toxicity of selected newer insecticides viz., deltamethrin, spinosad, abamectin and emamectin benzoate in comparision with the organophosporus insecticide malathion to the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky, in an attempt to find out a safer and effective seed protectant. The LC50 values based on bioassay studies indicated that...
